Super League play-offs: Josh Charnley sees Warrington Wolves’ efforts reap rewards

The winter months spent slogging off in all weathers on the training floor are paying off to Josh Charnley at Warrington Wolves.
The winger and his team-mates saw their efforts rewarded in August once they overcame rivals St Helens 18-4 at Wembley to raise the Challenge Cup, banishing the memories of the preceding year’s defeat against Catalans Dragons.
Warrington are in pursuit of another decoration that has so far proved elusive for them begin their search to go back to Castleford Tigers on Thursday night, and being the Super League title.
Last year’s 12-4 loss to Wigan Warriors at Old Trafford was the Wolves’ fourth defeat in Super League’s showpiece game and with one trophy already procured, Charnley would like to guarantee Steve Price’s side do not see their own efforts throughout the season go to waste.
“The pain was (ahead of the Challenge Cup final) and we spoke about it previously,” Charnley told Sky Sports.
“It is not great losing and you work so hard, you’re in over Christmas training difficult in the snow and the rain, and you also do everything you can to get some silverware.
“Last yearwe were fortunate enough to be in 2 finals and we lost themwe began this season with targets and we have got one of those goals today. We just need the previous bit of this puzzle”
A return to Old Trafford would indicate Charnley’s fourth look with Warrington with returned following nearly two years playing in the code together with Sale Sharks to league in 2018.
The reflects favorably on his spell in rugby union, although he didn’t have the exact identical effect with Sale as fellow cross-code wide-man Denny Solomona.
It didn’t take long to settle back into league when he came in Warrington, bringing together a few improvements to his game while playing with the Sharks that he left.
“I’ve played rugby league because I was six and I’ve never know another sport, so it was not too tough to get into it,” Charnley explained.
“The greatest thing was putting my body back into the contact, and which has been the biggest danger.
“I think I’m maybe more comfy under the large ball. In union, there is a good deal of grabbing and kicking.
“It’s little technical matters and a great deal of marriage teams are now taking league into their game. I enjoyed my spell there and when I catch a large ball over my mind I am buzzing.”
Charnley understands what it takes to get to win the Super League Grand Final too, having been part of the Wigan teams which triumphed at 2010, 2013 and 2016 – the two viewing the Cherry and Whites conquer his current team.
Since they slipped from second to fourth, putting them into a win-or-bust elimination but despite this Challenge Cup triumph, the type in the league of Warrington has been patchy in the final weeks of the season.
Charnley has backed Warrington to thrive in that situation using the lessons learned by the victory over St Helens in Wembley to help them.
“It was one of the where we had to stay in the match,” Charnley explained. “Saints are a fantastic team and we are a fantastic team on the afternoon, so it was going to be a thrilling match.
“It was only down to who kept hold of the ball and did exactly the correct things.
“We get one shot now and on Thursday we’re carrying that into it, so we’re fully relied on doing the task ”
