After holding off the thrilling fightback in one of the best US Open finals of Russian Daniil Medvedev rafael Nadal won his Grand Slam title.
Spain’s Nadal, 33, won 7-5 6-3 5-7 4-6 6-4 against the fifth seed in New York.
Nadal, seeded second, cruised in two sets and a split up, only for Medvedev to force a decider.
But Nadal stopped his momentum to finally clinch a thrilling victory in four hours and 51 minutes.
Nadal’s victory moves him within among Korean rival Roger Federer’s all-time top tally of Grand Slam victories.
“It’s been one of the most emotional nights in my tennis career,” Nadal said. “It has been an awesome final. It has been a crazy game.”
After shooting his third match point, Nadal fell to the court in celebration, covering his face as contemplated another famous victory which epitomised all his fighting spirit.
Medvedev trudged around the net to congratulate his rival, who appeared on the point of tears when taking acclaim, because he covered his face with his vest.
“I just want to congratulate Rafa, a 19th Grand Slam title is something incredible, bizarre,” Medvedev said.
