BMW PGA: Padraig Harrington wants all Ryder Cup hopefuls at Wentworth

Padraig Harrington has warned potential members of his European Ryder Cup group there’ll be”no excuses” for not playing at the BMW PGA Championship next year.
Qualifying for the European team starts this week and ends at Wentworth September, shortly before Harrington takes his side into Whistling Straits to defend the Ryder Cup against the Team USA of Steve Stricker.
Harrington is thrilled to find a stellar area teeing it up in the West Course this week, headlined by Rory McIlroy, and he’s intent on seeing more of the same a year from now when positions on his group for Wisconsin are most likely to be decided.
“This is a huge part of why it’s beginning this week and why it’s ending in the BMW PGA Championship,” said Harrington, soon after unveiling Robert Karlsson because his first assistant captain. “Here really will be the flagship event in Europe and the players turn up and take it.
“This is our biggest European event, it is the one you want to be there. This season you are sure to find a really strong field, which is not just important, but it’s going to be exceptionally significant come this time that we possess the best players playing with with the occasion.
“If you can find places still to be decided, every participant will likely probably be going up against other great players that week and you also will not be any excuses. You ca turn around and say’well, I don’t wish to return to this event; it’s not big enough’.
“This will cause no explanations next year, as everyone will soon be here who wishes to get on the group. And it is a golf course now, it really is. They’ve created the improvements and everyone loves it and it is a true solid golf program and it’ll create fine play, which is precisely the type of golf course we are going to be analyzing the players on.”
Harrington also emphasized the value of getting rookies on the group, together with the likes of Matt Wallace and Open winner Shane Lowry one of those likely to create their own Ryder Cup debuts.
“We need rookies,” Harrington added. “How do you get the atmosphere and buzz on the group? You want men there just thrilled to be excited and there, and the older guys get the capability to help and manage a young player. That’s the beauty of The Ryder Cup, to possess rookies on the group.
“Certainly you wouldn’t wish to go in there using 12 rookies and should nine rookies qualify, I’ll be picking three seasoned men. We won’t be going in with 12 rookies, however, you would like a great mix because the rookies have made it.
“Those are the guys that come out and they all glow. I’m hoping to get a great balance on the team, and everything I buy, the nine men who qualify will deserve to be there, and it’s my job to select three guys to rip them out, and then it is myself, Robert and the other vice-captains’ tasks for the most out of them when we are there during the week”
