James Maddison is in line to make his England debut at the coming foreign qualifiers. That he deserves this opportunity to show Gareth Southgate what he could perform and the Leicester playmaker contains qualities which others in the group do not, writes Adam Bate.
Even talk of this paucity of alternatives for the director has turned into a recurring motif. Some guys can play only 1 role but he’s the quality and the brain to play really well in a few positions.”
Maybe Rodgers’ use of Maddison in a different position has persuaded Southgate which there is a part for him . His warmth map this year proves that he can perform his job in that half-space across the side of the pitch – an alternative option in that zone to the players that like to operate in behind but not an inferior one.
The creativity of maddison could make him particularly useful against the defences which are prevalent in football. There is still room to get a player who can slow down things in addition to speed up them. And when Southgate does need to change things to a 4-2-3-1 mid-game afterward he has a participant in the squad who’s ideal for that function that is fundamental.
Building an worldwide squad is really a balancing act. It is not about finding the option.
